alright so im 23 in a few days when i was 16 i dropped out of middle school (8th grade) i technically havent even graduated 6th grade let me give a little explanation as to why that is.

when i was younger i was bullied a lot. like an every day thing i grew up really poor and went the wealthier based schools ( i say that in the sense that the majority of the school children were well above the poverty / middle-class line. the bullying didnt really affect my schooling until i was in 6th grade for the first year which is when i started to get bigger and be able to defend myself i got into a lot of fights. over and over id get expelled and sent to what we called the bad kids school (which funny enough is where i got along with people the most) anyway at this school theyd send you too after being expelled. they literally didnt care about you or if you showed up or anything so i just did what i wanted this happened literally 5 years in a row.

6th grade 5 times (pretty shameful) it got so bad that they eventually just pushed me into 8th grade and told me if i did well on the tests theyd bump me up to 9th grade swhich sounded like a good deal except for the fact that book wise im an actual degenerate. i knew nothing while im not completely illiterate or incapable of intelligent conversation i just cant take any tests. so at 16 i dropped out. with no more than a 6th grade education.

now all i do is sit at home with a panic disorder play video games and waste away. but id like to take some steps to change that i want to get my GED but im not going to mess with it until i have a basic understanding for general math/history/grammar and whatever other essential things i need to know to be a normal functioning human being. so basically im looking for any and all free tools i can use to learn on my PC while keeping me motivated (my biggest problem is motivation) i want to set aside atleast 2 hours a day dedicated to just learning i figure at 2 hours a day ill be doing alright ( i hope atleast ) anyway, thanks for taking the time to look through my long drawn out post for a simple short point i just feel like people dont think of you as bad when you explain to them what all happened to lead up to you being a shitty human. <3

The post Middleschool Dropout looking to learn the basics. first appeared on Fulmore Middle School.

i got this GED prep book and i’m actually doing amazing at it (except for math..), but i’m starting to wonder if getting my GED before going to college is really a good route to go down. is there a way i can combine high school with college? like a dual-enrollment type situation? do you already have to be enrolled in high school to apply for dual enrollment? i am so confused about all of this! i just want to get college done with fast, mostly because i’m so academically behind my peers.

any alternatives, explanations, advice, or anything at all would be greatly appreciated! even if it seems like basic knowledge, i could benefit from it. thank you! 🙂

EDIT: thank you guys so much for all the advice and the support. :’) not gonna lie i cried a little because i’ve never gotten so much support about this and have always felt extremely isolated and inadequate about it. i’m definitely gonna work extra hard at my GED studies now and try out all the awesome advice!

Before you come at me with “hormones” or “puberty”, I am completely aware, but middle school is not the one to blame. It won’t cancel out the fact I had a good experience.

I frequently hear that the worst years of school are middle school, but most of what I heard from there has to do with terrible teachers/livelihood/bullies. Middle school had the best school years for me, despite that it was the era of puberty and “cringy” stuff. I didn’t love every single day, but I wish that I could relive the experience again. I’m not denying the terrible things other middle school students went through, but I’m not the one among the group that hates middle school.

The post Middle school isn't bad at all first appeared on Fulmore Middle School.

Most of the ones I met lacked social maturity as in they had strange personalities.

tl;dr Given the research, what would you recommend as a societal approach to homeschooling? Should it be legal? Regulated? Would you consider home schooling your own children, if you could? If you were home schooled, what was your experience?

_____

I was home schooled all the way until college. I had a formal curriculum for the first half and somewhere in my teenage years my parents transitioned to a more un-schooling approach, so I ended up teaching myself everything.

It worked out really well for me since I did really well in college and I’ve been successful since then. I’ve always had a really positive attitude towards home schooling because I felt that it prepared me well for college, even though I was frustrated that my parents had such a hands-off approach.

Looking back on it though, my siblings had a really bad time. None of them have been successful academically like I have. There were four of us, so numerically I don’t think a 1 out of 4 success rate is very good.

Approaching it from a more quantitative perspective, research seems to show that home schooled students have higher than average test scores: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15582159.2017.1395638. I’m always worried by these, however, because home schooling parents tend to be 1. wealthier than average and 2. more likely to be involved in their children’s education (not automatic, since un-schooling is a thing). Since socio-economic level and parental involvement are the strongest indicators of children’s academic success, would these children do just as well in a public school?

Since I never went to school, I don’t know how bad bullying is. But two of my siblings ended up in public school for some time and they were bullied horribly, including by teachers (my sister was verbally abused by a teacher during detention). I would be willing to accept a worse education to avoid what comes down to abuse — and if bullying is as bad nationwide as it appears to be, then it looks like most children are suffering abuse.

From a societal perspective, abuse can be a problem within home schooled households as well. The more isolated a household is, the more likely family abuse is. Should home schooling be banned or regulated to avoid this in some way? How does the abuse compare to what students experience from teachers and students at school?

The post What do you think about home schooling? first appeared on Fulmore Middle School.

But, I do think middle school is worst. Middle school is where groups of kids that use to be friends in elementary school break a part and out grow each other and form new groups of friends they make.

Kids are absolutely brutal. But high schoolers are more mature than middle schoolers and are more aware of their actions and the consequences. Plus in HS, especially junior / senior year, is when they stop giving a shit and mind their own business.

The things kids can say and do to other kids can be absolutely heartbreaking. Hell, even kids in elementary school can say some pretty hurtful things to other kids. But middle school is where kids really hit puberty and try to find where they fit in, and they’ll do anything it takes to put others down.
